Solent City Chorus is the performing element of the The Portsmouth and District Barbershop Harmony Club which was formed in the mid 1970s. The Club is a member of the British Association of Barbershop Singers (BABS) and specialises in a form of a cappella four-part harmony for men known as Barbershop Harmony. This classification derives from the musical style, the chord structures and voice-parts. We do, however, complement our repertoire with a variety of other unaccompanied singing styles and popular songs. The Portsmouth Club supports male quartet singing and has featured several medal-winning quartets over the years. We have access to national singing coaches and trainers and build their expertise into our annual programme with special training evenings.
Whatever your aspirations from learning to sing in a chorus or quartet to taking part in the annual British convention / competition, our style of singing offers all the ingredients for a lifetime's singing experience and a weekly opportunity to be in good company with other singers.
Solent City Chorus meets every Wednesday evening at 7.45pm at Christchurch Hall, London Road, Widley, PO7 5AT (near Portsmouth) - this is the nearest postcode - the church hall is actually on the other side of the road next to the Church. We shall be pleased to welcome you for an evening or for a lifetime! There are no age limits at either end and particular care and effort is given to helping new members fit in and get acquainted with the style and with our members. You are more than welcome to come along and join in and we invite you to send us a note from the Contacts page of this website. Be our guest, we look forward to hearing from you!
The British barbershop association (see www.singbarbershop.com) is affiliated to the USA/Canada organisation, the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS - see: www.barbershop.org). Barbershop Harmony singing is not just for the fellows! In the UK the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) has nearly 50 registered clubs and the Sweet Adelines' region has around 1000 singers in 20 choruses.
